From Principles of Management
Taylor's principles of scientific management include: (i) Science, not rule of thumb, meaning work should be analysed scientifically to find the best method and standard. (ii) Harmony, not discord, which stresses friendly relations between workers and management instead of conflict. (iii) Cooperation, not individualism, where management and workers work together to achieve higher output. (iv) Development of each worker, through scientific selection and training so that each person performs the job with maximum efficiency.
Management is important because it helps in achieving group goals through coordination and unity of direction. It improves efficiency by optimum utilisation of resources and reduction of wastage. Management enables an organisation to face change by planning, adapting and controlling performance, and it encourages innovation and stability through policies, systems and leadership.
SWOT analysis is a tool used to identify an organisation’s Strengths and Weaknesses (internal factors) and Opportunities and Threats (external factors). It helps management understand the current position of the organisation and prepare strategies that match internal capabilities with external environment.
Formulating strategies using SWOT matrix: In the SWOT matrix, four combinations guide strategy choice. SO strategies use strengths to exploit opportunities (growth strategies). ST strategies use strengths to face or reduce external threats (protective/competitive strategies). WO strategies reduce weaknesses by using opportunities (improvement and expansion). WT strategies minimise weaknesses and avoid threats (defensive strategies to reduce risk and ensure survival).
Merits: SWOT is simple and systematic, improves understanding of internal and external factors and supports planning by highlighting key areas needing attention. It helps in generating strategic alternatives and aligning resources with opportunities.
Limitations: SWOT may be subjective and depends on judgement and data quality. It can oversimplify complex issues and may not prioritise factors. SWOT does not automatically provide the best strategy; further evaluation of feasibility, risk and resources is required to select the most suitable strategy.
